In the hopes of finding a messaging alternative that would work as smoothly as iMessage once did, we both downloaded a slew of apps that promised to help bridge the chasm. We tried everything:WhatsApp (nope), Slack (felt too professional) and GroupMe (two does not a “group” make) were all installed and then quickly deleted. We settled, begrudgingly, on Gchat, which remains to serve its purpose.

I have to ask, but have you tried Telegram? It works everywhere, has more features than Whatsapp and iMessage, it’s easy to use and plugs into iOS and Mac devices pretty seamlessly.
Best feature is firstly the gif function, and secondly the Mac app which lets you easily hop between your devices.
Add to that its cross device message history, you’ll probably wonder why iMessage can be so fickle with keeping message history synced up between your devices.
