Next-gen Xbox will be a “Cloud Hybrid” console powered by AI and ML, launching in 2028
Microsoft could be on the verge of creating a cloud/AI-powered Xbox console for the next generation, according to a huge leak that hit the internet recently.
The leak, which is considered to be “the biggest in Xbox history,” came in the form of sensitive documents that appeared during the FTC vs. Microsoft court case that occurred earlier this year. The redacted document contained several plans for Xbox’s future that included a refresh for the Xbox Series line, a new controller, and the next-gen Xbox console.
According to some slides in the documentation, the next-gen Xbox features “cloud hybrid” technology along with AI and machine learning. The goal of Microsoft engineers is to create a hybrid game platform that leverages both client and cloud power to optimize game performance, operations, and development for players and creators.
The key strategy involves a switch to an ARM64 CPU and targeting DirectX ray tracing and machine-learning-powered graphical enhancement for improving graphics. Microsoft envisions AI and ML powering various aspects like matchmaking, player discovery, game testing, and monetization in the future.
Mircosoft is also aiming to provide an “immersive game and app platform” allowing individuals to develop their own games on top of playing them. Lastly, the leak also suggests that the new Xbox will arrive in 2028.
Following the massive leak, Xbox chief Phil Spencer contacted employees via email, informing them that the plans were “unintentionally disclosed” in accordance with the FTC v. Microsoft case. In related news, details on Nintendo’s next-gen console were also leaked during the same case, suggesting it will be as graphically powerful as the PS4 and Xbox One.
