Nintendo Switch 2 delayed to March 2025 in response to scalping
A report by Nikkei magazine has insinuated that the upcoming release of Nintendo Switch 2 has been pushed back to March 2025, possibly due to anti-scalping measures.
The Japanese media outlet notes that the significance of the launch window is a move by Nintendo to ensure ample production to meet consumer demand and mitigate scalping issues. The scarcity of the Switch following its March 2017 launch had led to a flourishing scalping market, a situation Nintendo is keen to avoid repeating.
In addition, March 2025 represents the earliest feasible launch window for Nintendo’s next-gen console, hinting that it might fall outside of the company’s next fiscal year. Given the growing anticipation for the successor to the Switch, a post-March 2025 is a deviation from normal expectations.
In recent developments, Nintendo revealed it had sold 13.74 million Switch units in the first nine months of the fiscal year, marking a 7.8% decrease compared to the previous year. However, the company increased its sales forecast for the current fiscal year from 15 million to 15.5 million units sold
The nearly seven-year-old Switch sales have reached 139.36 million units, trailing the Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2 in the all-time best-selling console rankings. Additionally, the Switch has amassed 122 million users in the 2023 calendar year.
