Very good write up Andrew. I was actually thinking of writing something myself about this very topic. I have had many years experience on both platforms, and I can say hands down Google wins in every department.

I would attribute much of the AWS success story to their peripheral services I.e s3 and rds. These services where lightbulb moments for developers, and next thing you know AWS is the #1 cloud. It often so happens that when things get hyped like amazon there is a competing product with superior service and cost that often get overlooked as the business has already realised significant business impact from their AWS investment. Problem is they are now locked in to that decision by their choice of tech, especially if they went all in on rds or one of the many other SAAS offerings they have.

From disk snapshots to command line tools the whole google cloud ecosystem is extremely well curated and simple to understand. You have inspired me to do an article on the performance differences that I have gathered over the years.
