I Need to Prove My Work is Worth Paying For
Not too long ago, I came up with a concept for a “Choose Your Own Adventure” story. I wanted to make it fun and interesting, but I also wanted it to cover a wide range of contemporary issues and topics. After mapping out my story, I decided to write and publish it using Medium.
I knew I had something cool on my hands, but I wanted to see exactly how cool people thought it was. I got in touch with the always-helpful editors at The Coffeelicious, and we discussed the most effective way to publish and distribute A Modern ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ — a project I will forever be proud of.
This CYOA story was not my first post on Medium — I’ve also had stories published in Human Parts and I even manage my own publication, The Bigger Picture. But this project was certainly my most successful piece to date, partially because the Medium Staff recommended it, exposing many more readers to the post.
I’ve received fantastic feedback so far — through Medium, via Twitter, and even some personal messages through my website — and by giving away my work for free, I’ve gained momentum for myself in this online writing community.
Now that I know people appreciate and enjoy my work, I just have to show them there’s more where that came from. (Might have to charge money eventually, though. Dude’s gotta eat.)
