796 Journalists have been murdered in the last 15 years

Nearly 800 journalists have been murdered since 1992, according to data from the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The NGO report that a total of 1219 reporters, broadcasters, columnists, producers, camera operators and technicians have their lost their lives in the last decade and a half.

The majority of those killed have been victims of murder, with an additional 265 killed in crossfire/combat, 152 killed on the basis of their dangerous assignment, with the remaining four still unaccounted for.

The following five maps show where journalists have been killed in the last 5 years. The 2016 map shows those killed so far.

Syria has played host to the most journalist deaths for each of the last 5 years.

2012 saw 31 journalists killed in the country.
