It’s patch season for the Tekken 7 community, and there’s one player who couldn’t be happier.

Her character, Alisa, acquired some new tools to work with in the recent Season 2 update. UYU | KawaiiFaceMiles says she’s fortunate that her favorite chainsaw-wielding android came out stronger than ever.

The recent patch brought a litany of changes to the entire cast, and almost every character has over a dozen revisions to their movelists. To prepare herself for the upcoming Tekken World Tour events, she focused on what new additions would work for her gameplan.

“I looked at buffs and figured out what was useful, creating new setups from that,” KawaiiFaceMiles says. “Individual matchups don’t change, but I still need to watch out for what’s been altered on their side, so I only need to train for those instances.”

Regardless of what was nerfed or buffed for any character, she believes that Tekken 7 is a pretty balanced fighting game, and the patch merely resulted in a meta that’s overall more normalized.

“Everyone in the cast is viable competitively,” KawaiiFaceMiles says. “No one is useless, and the patch didn’t mess with that.”

Even though levels between the game’s tier list are close, they still exist, and those at the bottom have to work a little harder to win. UYU | Fergus feels that Anna, who was added as part of Season 2’s DLC, kept her old flaws — punishment, tracking, and risky lows — from previous games, culminating to a toolset weaker than most.

“I think she’s slightly stronger than she was in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 thanks to Chaos Judgement buffs but in a game where a lot of characters are strong, I think she falls behind,” he says. “Maybe low or low-mid tier.”

Thankfully, Fergus also plays Asuka, who he believes is one of the best characters in Tekken 7.

“Honestly the best thing that has happened to Asuka in Season 2 is SS2/B3 not being nerfed, as these were obscenely strong tools in Season 1, and they have went untouched,” he says, jokingly begging Tekken’s director Katsuhiro Harada to consider leaving them strong.

Whether it be Anna or Asuka, Fergus has a different take on training for the tournament season than KawaiiFaceMiles.

“I usually grind ranked a lot online with different characters so my matchup knowledge is quite strong and it builds on my anti-character options and how to approach them,” says Fergus, noting that he rarely uses Asuka online to squash the possibility of developing bad habits.

While Anna players feel a little disappointed, those who’ve been pining for Lei, the other piece of DLC added in the Season 2 patch, are happy with his return.

“I have to adjust to Tekken 7’s engine, but overall he feels fine,” says UYU | P. Ling, who readied himself for SCR 2018 by scouring what little tech was out, and practiced from there.

As for his namesake character, Ling Xiaoyu, he believes the patch left her fairly intact.

“I don’t think she was nerfed too bad,” says P. Ling. “Small adjustments to her movelist but I think she’s still playable.”
