Mark Cuban- Headshot

Bridging the gap between ‘the world as it is’ and ‘the world as it should be’ is something I hope we as a society aspire to do. The fantastic, yet troublesome wrinkle is that every individual in this same society has differing ideas about how the world is, how the world should be, and how to best bridge the gap! In practice, this translates into mild-mannered conversations and heated debates. Knowing these things occur for good reason, I am sharing who I believe is the best candidate for US President in 2020 and why.

Mark Cuban has been married for 18 years and has 3 kids. He is an entrepreneur. Mark attended Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to a middle-class family.

He is aware of current and future technological developments.

Mark identified the potential of the internet by 1994 when he and his business partner became founders of AudioNet, a company built to broadcast radio on the internet. During this time, the concept of the internet had gained some traction, but widespread adoption did not occur until the early 2000’s. This is an example of where Mark was aware and took action early.

Prior to this venture, he became very knowledgeable about computers. He sold his computer consulting service, MicroSolutions in 1990. Fast forward to 2020- Mark Cuban is not only aware, but also knowledgeable about many of the current and future technological developments. He is still putting in the effort to keep up and learn about new technologies that are not fully understood by both young and old people:

He is fair and stands up for what he believes is right.

Mark is tough on himself and shares ideas openly to receive feedback. In a recent suggestion about response to COVID-19 on Twitter, Mark ended his own comment with, “Thoughts?” to promote discussion and disagreement. Mark acknowledges when he doesn’t know, seeks out information from those who do, and also stands up for what he believes is right.

Since Mark bought a majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks in 2000, he has been criticized for a variety of actions he’s taken. In nearly all circumstances, where his actions deviated from the league, the NBA and other teams have since shifted towards his actions rather than away:

He is a realistic optimist.

Mark was 16 years old when The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette went on strike. He identified that residents in Pittsburgh wanted their morning newspaper, and that need could be filled by delivering newspapers from Cleveland. Mark adapted to his new environment quickly, went over to Cleveland, and came back to sell papers on a street corner in downtown Pittsburgh.

The world is moving in many different directions trying to find balance in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. While some countries, states, cities, individuals, etc. are frozen, others are reacting quickly. Mark acknowledges the uncertainty we currently have and then encourages entrepreneurship across the country:

He has demonstrated consistent learning and success.

Mark started repackaging baseball cards and selling them when he was 10. He started taking business classes at the University of Pittsburgh during his junior year of high school. After transferring to Indiana University, he moved down to Dallas where he worked various jobs and determined the next venture he’d start.

Mark has the ability to learn about various topics and surround himself with people who are excellent at specific tasks. These abilities have enabled him to learn from both successes and failures. Over time, he has demonstrated a consistent pattern of success, primarily because of his willingness to put in the effort and learn:

He has experience.

Mark has accomplished a lot over his lifetime. He has experience being broke, leading organizations of varying size, and raising a family. At the same time, he still gets fired up about the things that matter most to him. Not only has he appeared in TV shows and movies, he also provides philanthropic support to various causes. He is the ultimate competitor and has thrived through the sport of business. These lessons and experience equip him to lead us through these transition years:
