In the latest episode of “Ask a CISSP” on The Other Side of the Firewall, I had the privilege of interviewing a true pioneer in the cybersecurity industry — Professor Roger Whyte. A cybersecurity solutions architect, founder of Professor Roger’s Cyber Lounge, podcaster, public speaker, cyber mentor, and career coach, Roger is a powerhouse committed to making a significant impact.

A Mission Rooted in Diversity

Roger’s mission is straightforward yet profoundly impactful: to increase the representation of Black professionals in cybersecurity. Despite working for a major software company with only 5% African-American employees, Roger remains undeterred. He has taken it upon himself to train and mentor individuals from all walks of life — truck drivers, nail technicians, McDonald’s workers, Walmart employees — to transition into cybersecurity.

“My mission is to get as many Black people into cyber as possible,” Roger states passionately. His program, is a comprehensive training and mentorship initiative designed to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to secure their first cybersecurity job.

Building a Community

Roger’s Cyber Lounge serves as an innovative platform where experts help newcomers, creating a supportive environment for learning and growth. “It’s a real cool atmosphere, a lounge-like place where you can learn and collaborate,” Roger describes.

His dedication doesn’t stop at entry-level training. Roger stays involved in his mentees’ careers for three to five years, helping them advance to higher levels and achieve financial stability. “I want everybody I touch to be part of the six-figure club. Financial stability is part of freedom,” he emphasizes.

Legacy and Inspiration

Roger’s drive stems not only from a desire to uplift his community but also from a deeply personal place. Inspired by his daughter’s pride in his work and a commitment to legacy, Roger continues to push boundaries. “Now that’s my inspiration — to make sure my daughter stays proud of me and to leave a legacy,” he reflects.

The Future of Cybersecurity and AI

Roger is also at the forefront of integrating AI into cybersecurity. “AI has been out for a while, but the generative part is what hit the news,” he explains. He is actively involved in teaching fundamental AI classes to ensure his community does not miss the boat on this transformative technology.

Join the Movement

Roger’s story is a testament to the power of dedication, mentorship, and community. With 5,000 people already trained, his goal of 10,000 is within reach. If you’re looking to break into cybersecurity or support this incredible initiative, connect with Professor Roger Whyte on LinkedIn.

As Roger eloquently puts it, “If you see it, you believe it.” Let’s help make this vision a reality.
