In the ever-evolving world of cybersecurity and IT, few individuals manage to bridge the gap between technology and community empowerment as effectively as Mariah Simone’ Denson. As the founder and president of Global Patch, a nonprofit dedicated to creating pathways for BIPOC individuals in the gaming, eSports, and tech industries, Mariah is on a mission to ensure that underrepresented communities have the resources and support they need to thrive in these dynamic fields.

From Lifelong Gamer to Advocate

Mariah Simone’s journey began with a passion for gaming. “I’ve been gaming since I was like three,” she shared. Her early exposure to gaming through systems like the Atari and Nintendo 64, handed down from her father, sparked a lifelong interest that would eventually evolve into a professional and academic pursuit.

This passion for gaming wasn’t just a hobby; it became the foundation for her career and advocacy work. As she grew older, she noticed the significant lack of representation and support for BIPOC individuals in these industries, which motivated her to take action.

Building Global Patch

The inception of Global Patch was driven by Mariah Simone’s desire to address the disparities she observed, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I saw a lot of things that I didn’t agree with, that I didn’t like, that I felt like something needs to be done,” she explained. The lack of internet access and computer literacy in her community was a glaring issue, prompting her to create an organization that would provide accessible resources and training.

Global Patch focuses on getting people into gaming, eSports, digital production, and tech industries, primarily through education or career pathways. “Either I teach, or we find other organizations that give out free resources or easily accessible resources to help,” Mariah Simone elaborated. Her organization is committed to not only introducing individuals to these fields but also ensuring their safety and success once they are there.

Researching Representation in Tech

Mariah Simone’s commitment to empowering underrepresented communities extends into her academic pursuits as well. As a doctoral student, her research focuses on Black and Indigenous women and girls in tech, particularly within video games and eSports. “How can video game simulation help learning, but also how can we use this technology to get these groups of people into these career spaces?” she pondered.

Her research aims to uncover the challenges and opportunities for these groups, providing insights that can inform policies and practices to foster greater inclusion. By highlighting the experiences of Black and Indigenous women and girls in tech, Mariah Simone’ hopes to create more supportive environments and pathways for future generations.

The Intersection of Gaming, IT, and Cybersecurity

One of the most fascinating aspects of Mariah Simone’s work is how it intersects with IT and cybersecurity. As a certified professional with an authorized Unreal Engine chapter in Jacksonville, she offers free training and resources to those eager to learn. “If anybody’s trying to learn, if anybody wants access to those resources, they can just get in contact with me. And for free, I will help you learn,” she stated.

Mariah Simone’s expertise in game development platforms like Unreal Engine is not just about creating games; it’s also about understanding the technology behind them. “The same technology that’s being used for gaming is the same technology that’s being used at the US Department of Defense. They’re using Unity, they’re using Unreal Engine. They’re worried about cybersecurity,” she noted.

This overlap between gaming technology and cybersecurity underscores the importance of transferable skills. Mariah Simone’s work helps individuals see how their gaming skills can be applied to other industries, including IT and cybersecurity. By doing so, she is opening up new career opportunities for those who might not have considered these fields otherwise.

Embracing AI and Preparing for the Future

In addition to her work with gaming and cybersecurity, Mariah Simone is also navigating the rapidly changing landscape of artificial intelligence (AI). She acknowledges the concerns surrounding AI but believes it can be a powerful tool when used responsibly. “As long as you are helping your child understand those critical learning concepts… they should be fine,” she advised.

Mariah’s approach to AI education emphasizes foundational skills and critical thinking. By teaching children and adults how to use AI as a tool rather than a crutch, she is preparing them for a future where technology will play an even more integral role in our lives.

Community and Global Impact

Mariah Simone’s impact extends beyond her local community. Her international experiences, including living in Japan, South Korea, and the Bahamas, have given her a unique perspective on global education and development. These experiences have informed her approach to building educational programs and initiatives that are culturally sensitive and globally relevant.

In the Bahamas, for instance, she has worked with various nonprofits to develop educational programs that address local needs. “Once you’ve learned how to do this, you can replicate it sort of everywhere you go,” she said, highlighting the universal applicability of her work.

Looking Ahead

Mariah Simone’ Denson’s journey from gamer to community leader is a testament to the power of passion, education, and community involvement. Through Global Patch, her research, and her work with gaming and cybersecurity, she is making a tangible difference in the lives of many, particularly those from underrepresented communities.

Her message is clear: with the right support and resources, anyone can succeed in the tech and gaming industries. By breaking down barriers and providing accessible pathways, Mariah Simone’ is ensuring that the next generation of tech professionals is more diverse, inclusive, and prepared for the future.
