Maybe I’ve had better luck with printers but I’ve only bought a handful of printers over the years (given away or thrown out “free” inkjet printers I have gotten). I currently have a very solid multifunction printer and previous to that I had laser printers. My rule of thumb for printers is to at a minimum buy a printer that has duplex functionality (which tends to be a bit higher end) and if you can afford it laser over inkjet to minimize refills. However more to the point in the past few years I have stopped printing very often — I only print things that need to be paper (boarding passes when traveling with my family as juggling phone & toddler for multiple digital passes is tricky) or photos or other artistic items for craft projects of my wife. I think the amount of home printing will continue to decline (photos/art projects aside) — even schools I can imagine will accept digital homework as teachers will likely want to use digital tools to grade homework and leave comments (and perhaps also check for plagerism as higher levels of school).
The trend I would predict in homes however is a rise of “printers” that are really more like in-home manufacturing tools. My wife has a device that does digital cutouts (can cut out stickers, iron-ons, fabric and more) and I would predict that similar devices along with 3D printing capabilities will become increasingly common (perhaps with the ability to also print images/text but more often used to make other things.
The bigger blind spot I would predict is in how will used items be modernized or recycled — especially with cars where Moore’s law + increasing tech components throughout cars means that even just a few years old cars are far more “out of date” than similarly used cars were even just a decade ago. I predict there will be a very robust market to upgrade the digital aspects of older cars (retrofiting modern safety features like side impact / blind spot warning systems, rear parking cameras but also more traditional elements like navigation systems, audio systems and increasingly adding wifi etc).
