Like I said, looking at one list without looking at the other is of no use, and is deceptive.
But for fun… let’s visit your emancipation example. That is not modern progressive. The modern progressive is not after that. The modern progressive is after different treatment under the law (and they have it) based on race and any number of other factors. Not the same rights for all (which was the concept behind emancipation) but different rights based on identity politics.
The odd thing about history is that conservatives are the true progressives of the American age in a sense. Conservatives are the true liberals of the American age.
I’ll explain.
Conservatives are trying to conserve the most profoundly progressive idea in human history, which is self rule and the sovereign individual. Such an individual is not granted rights, but claims full rights merely for being human. This is *classical liberalism*: (what was considered liberal before the “liberals of today” stole the term… so “classical liberalism” had to be invented)
“ Classical liberalism is a political ideology that values the freedom of individuals — including the freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and markets — as well as limited government. ”
“ Classical liberalism is a political philosophy and ideology belonging to liberalism in which primary emphasis is placed on securing the freedom of the individual by limiting the power of the government.”
“ Classical liberalism places a particular emphasis on the sovereignty of the individual and considers property rights an essential component of individual liberty. “
The Republican party emancipated the slaves because of this belief.
The defeated Democrats then pivoted… hopping OVER liberal views (classic), and inventing neo liberalism (what we call liberalism today), and started to bribe blacks from the public trough. “We will take care of you if you will just vote for us.” This care taking role… this state force to “level” all playing fields, is not liberalism. It’s statism. But the left is very good at re-purposing words to serve its agenda.
Statism is not progressive… it’s regressive… where rights come once again from “kings” (AKA bureaucrats or party leaders), instead of from natural law or God. This is why progressives are associated with socialism.
On the other hand…equal rights mean there is one set of rights for all, deriving from naturally assumed rights. That is distinctly conservative.
For the statist progressive… rights are handed out to groups favored by the state or its institutions.
Womens rights, Transsexual rights, immigrants rights, etc. etc. etc.
It’s all about treating people differently, which is horrifically regressive.
For example, women have more rights than men today, because of a “progressive” agenda. What the left concerns itself with is continually grinding away at new excuses to make law to benefit only certain people.
(not to be confused with the favoritism exhibited by politicians to forge their political careers)
Here are the progressive students of UMich demanding resources and spaces… except they want blacks banned from them.
How is that progressive?
Oh wait. Did I say blacks? I meant whites.
Progressives don’t want emancipation today. They want control and subjugation of those that oppose them, via the state or other institutional authority. In Canada, if you express the “wrong” ideas, you face the Canadian human rights tribunal. Thanks progressives. So much for the sovereign individual.
Can you imagine whites demanding spaces so that they can plan opposition against those that stand in their way? What would you say about such demands? Hopefully: “fuck you guys”.
That’s what such an idea deserves.
