Baltimore is home to over 60 museums — astounding for the size of the city! As someone who has grown up here, these are the ones I would recommend when you visit.

American Visionary Arts Museum

The AVAM’s exterior is just a small glimps the wonder, talent, and color inside. This museum is great for art enthusiasts who want to see new or local art, as well as for families with kids who love art, but do not want to visit a more traditional art museum. The gift shop is very fun and full of Baltimore — themed goodies. This museum consists of multiple buildings and a beautiful urban garden. There is pull in parking and street parking here. Adult tickets are $16, children $10, with memberships available.

The Walters Art Museum

The Walters Art Museum has a wide variety of art from a diversity of places. My favorite room holds an impressive selection of pinned insects along with beautiful paintings of scenery. This museum has free admission, and as a child I loved going for the activities they have for kids.

Baltimore museum of Art

BMA boasts bold and expressive art, commenting on equity, social justice, politics, and history. This museum features a good stylistic mix between AVAM and The Walters. One of my favorite things about the BMA is their restaurant, Gertrude’s Chesapeake Kitchen. You can eat in the restaurant without going into the museum. Admission is free, though some exhibits may requrie tickets.

National Aquarium

While not technically a museum, the National Aquarium is one of my favorite things to do in Baltimore! I have probably visited over 20 times, from school field trips to days with family. My most recent trip had me looking down into the waters, looking at rays over 8 ft. long, and looking up into the trees to spot a resident sloth (yes, A SLOTH!). Every time I go there is something new, and I find the facility to be very clean and the fish well kept. The National Aquarium also works in conservation, with large scale environmental projects protecting the watershed. Adult tickets are $50, and “youths” are $40. Children under 4 are free.

Fort McHenry

Fort McHenry is not only a very scenic walk for a sunny day, but it is a national monument and historic shrine. Fun fact: the United States’ national anthem, written by Francis Scott key, was written here! You can read about the history of the fort, dating from the Civil War to WWII. There are weapons demonstrations and occassionaly air shows held here as well.

Sports Legends Museum

The Sports Legends Museum is literally right next to/ attached to Campden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles. This museum features the greats not only from baseball and football, but includes nearly every sport — even horse racing (Baltimore is home of the Preakness, after all). You can swing by the birthplace of Babe Ruth, Camden Yards, and M&T Bank Stadium (home of the Baltimore Ravens) as well.

There are so many museums in Baltimore, I only covered a mere 10% of them here. If you have visited the city, which museums did you think I should have mentioned?
