The impact of having the support of a mentor

Research and testing equips you with the knowledge you need to make informed decisions, but no amount of reading can match what a mentor can offer you and your business. Avoiding an obvious t-shirt cliché, mentors have a lot of experience and wisdom to offer that far exceeds their business acumen or monetary value.

I’m fortunate to have a few mentors, people I can talk to about anything and everything, business related or otherwise. I suffer from general anxiety which can make it quite difficult to focus, especially when my workload stacks up. Alongside slightly obsessive amounts of cycling, having someone to talk to helps immeasurably. Because my mentors aren’t involved with the day to day, they’re able to maintain clarity when it comes to making decisions. They have also helped me learn things like how to manage my to do list, prioritising and most importantly, knowing when to say no; all skills that help combat the feeling of being totally overwhelmed.

We schedule catchups on a regular basis, anywhere from once a week to once a month depending on how we’re getting on. These sessions offer me the opportunity to reflect on what i’ve achieved since we last met and to verbalise my trails of thought.

I’m extremely grateful for every minute of time that my mentors spend with me, I know they’re very busy so it means a lot that they’re willing to help me deal with my stuff as well! I hope that in the future i’ll be able to do the same for someone, especially as I know first hand the impact it can have.
