I kinda wish you’d gone further on this point: how templated/commoditised design adds, by default, trustworthiness and legitimises the content. Where previously a fringe/dangerous opinion or political view would be shown in a correspondingly badly designed site, vectors like Medium (or frameworks like Bootstrap) make it easy to couch them in well-designed backdrops, legitimising them in the background way you mention. It might just be a temporary artefact of this explosion of this easily accessible ‘good’ design but and numerous, much smarter people like Cennydd Bowles have made some interesting points about it regarding the ethics of design.
