How Niantic has Failed their Fans

Well, perhaps some of us saw it coming, but I certainly didn’t expect this game to turn into a mess.

It was all well and good at the beginning — trainers tracking and catching the virtual monsters. People were walking around, socializing with other fanatics. It was an Ingress-type game which actually gained traction, and got a lot of people on board. I mean, it’s the most popular game on the US Apple Store, and one of the most popular apps in the world.

So what went horribly wrong?

Well, it pretty much all began when the damned footprints decided to stop working. It was fine for a few days. It worked well.

Until it didn’t.

The community, being the wonderful people they are, banded together to create multiple apps and websites which would replace the temporarily broken tracking system. All is well, right? Niantic is able to find time to fix their game, and in my opinion, the tracking apps make the game a more engaging experience, by allowing me to see exactly what Pokemon are nearby, and how long they’re going to stay.

Well, I guess Niantic didn’t think so. Because they responded by not only removing the broken tracking system from their game, but also taking down everything that had intended to replace it.

By removing the response given to the player, the feedback you are now given is close to none. It’s hard to even consider this a game at all now. It’s become a simple task of “walk around, and hopefully something other than a Pidgey pops out.”

Here’s the thing, I don’t claim to know what Niantic is doing. However, I can speculate.
