There is a saying that goes, “You can bulls**t the whole world, but you can’t bulls**t yourself” (bulls**t ~ lie, yeah that one)and it explains the current attitude of our generation towards emerging technologies in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Here is an article by the world economic forum, stating how ai could impact our jobs. Some major points include:
- Some jobs are at high risk of being lost to AI, such as bank tellers and customer service representatives.
- Other jobs are expected to grow in demand, such as AI and machine learning specialists.
- In the long run (~2030), 40% of labor hours are predicted to be affected by ai.
All in all, many jobs will be lost and others created , but the lost jobs will outnumber the new jobs.
Now the question is, are we preparing enough ? In my opinion we’re not. The same college degree for which you took loan could be just worth a piece of paper(if it’s already not).
Now this is not the point of the article, I’m sure most of you must know ‘bout it. But let me ask you a question, are you doing something about it? If you’re like most people, “well we humans created ai, so it can’t be more intelligent and capable than us, right? ” (It’s like saying a son can’t be better than his father.) or “if i lose a job ‘coz of ai, my coworker will too.”
Then I’m sorry to say, you’re doing what most people think of the quaratine time- “a wasted opportunity”.
Now there isn’t a surefire way to tackle this problem instantly but if you have the patience to sit down and watch the technology grow and changing along with it, there is hope for you to come in the top 20%.
Now to test this, answer this ques :
On the scale of 0–100, how much do you rate youself in regards to your knowledge in ai tech innovations? And be honest with yourself.
This is the time where you can’t have a single skillset and hope to get a stable job. The old job market was like a multi-storey building where you have to have a strong skill as the base and year on year you have to build on top of it.
The new job market will be more like a tent, where you learn a skill and use it till a new better tech comes and you have to take your tent to a different place altogether. You either have to upgrade your skills rapidly or your field of work altogether.
There are three ways to tackle this at the moment:
- Expanding our knowlegde domain about AI and Emerging tech.
- Getting the now-how to use latest AI tools at an expert level in our workflow.
- Having the patience to see how the tech evolves.
And yeah this time it’s different than the computer boom, this time we’ll be chasing the technology and not the other way round.
They say “Change is the law of life” and embracing that change is the best way to tackle it.
