Two half brothers look so similar as infants that no one can tell them apart. One, the legitimate son of a rich man, is destined for a life of comfort, while the other is condemned to be a slave as he is part black. The mother of the would be slave is also the nurse of the other; to give her son the best life possible she switches the two. Soon the boy who is given every advantage becomes spoiled and cruel. He takes sadistic pleasure in tormenting his half brother. As they grow older, the townspeople no longer notice that the boys look similar, and they readily accept that each is born to his station. A local lawyer, David Wilson has had a similar ex

Title: Pure Mark Twain, Hence Great Read

Review: Who doesnât love Mark Twain? The Tragedy of Puddinâhead Wilson is another reason the answer to this question is almost nobody. Of course the time and place of this story means that Twain uses language that some today would find offensive, because many people these days ignore the historical context of any story.. The narrative is laced with the N-word which is used by both blacks and whites as a matter of course. In the context of when and where Twain is writing about, readers shouldnât let it bother them. The tale is a fascinating depiction of how a person is socialized depending on the environment he or she was born into and grew up in. The two baby boys of the tale, one white and the other almost white (only a minute fraction of colored blood in his veins who is nonetheless âblackâ) were switched by the (also) nearly white mother of one shortly after birth each grows up reflecting a slave environment for the white boy and a white environment for the near-white boy. The mother who serves in the white household is the only one who knows the truth. Unfortunately, things donât work out the way she planned and hoped. The ultimate hero, of course is Puddinâhead Wilson. The story is funny, but it is also very telling of the white-black relationship of the time. b b

Title: scathing indictment on racism and must read

Review: This late work by Mark Twain is less well known than many of his other works, but is an entertaining and profoundly human morality tale. Todayâs readers will have to get past the dialect and jarring use of a word never used today, and fit those into historical context, but the message is as current and clear as if the book had been written yesterday. A must read.

Title: There will NEVER be another Mark Twain

Review: Readers of Mr. Twain are familiar with his rare ability to use humor and historical, dialectical language via the characters of his works. âPuddânhead Wilsonâ is this language form itself. Twain displays for the first time to the vast majority of his readers of that time an investigative tool still used today in criminal investigations and subsequent trials. Each time I read Twain, a more devout fan I become

Title: I love Mark Twain

Review: Mark Twain presents a consistent outlook on his fellow man; that we are mostly foolish and feeble-minded. Who am I to say he is wrong! In Puddnâhead Wilson he delivers this again by means of a startling twist. Two infants are switched by a slave mother who replaces her masterâs baby with her own mostly white child, and vice versa. This crime is eventually uncovered by means of the latest in 19th century crime fighting science. I love Mark Twain, but this book could have been much better. By Twainâs own admission it started as another story entirely, but morphed into the one I just described. He says he tore out much of the old story âroot and branchâ. However there remains some aspects of the original story which are inconsistent and awkward in the published âPuddnâhead Wilsonâ. Just a bit more re-writing and this may have been a masterpiece. Nevertheless, this being one of his last books, and published late in his life, I will give him a break. I enjoyed it as is.

Review: Mark Twain is an extraordinarily funny writer. His observations of the ridiculous in human nature are never better than in this book, about the switching of eight month old babies, one a privileged heir, the other a slave, and how this eventually comes to light. Twain titles the book a tragedy, true enough when one considers that it involves a murder that is solved, very dramatically, in the courtroom by use of fingerprints. But his portraits of the various characters are priceless, He pokes at the worst trait of each character, using biting satire to make their foibles clear. And nobody escapes his sharp pen. My only negative is his constant use of slave dialect, which was wearying. By far the best part of the book is at the very end, in a postscript called âAuthorâs Note to âThose Extraordinary Twinsââ. In it, Twain describes the difficulty of having a tale start one way and end another, and I laughed out loud over and over as I read it. If you read the book, be sure to read the postscript!

Title: A must read!

Review: One of one of my favorite books of all time. A young friend was graduating from high school this year and asked that instead of a gift to give her a book that had special meaning in their own life to add to her library. As a young girl, growing up in the Jim Crow South this book gave me pause and changed my view of my world as a I knew it. In my view it is a classic.

Review: Excellent story. I found the book difficult to read not because of the insulting language but rather the extreme use of a dialect that I understand, for the most part, but I found over my head for the better part. Typical Mark Twain. I am very satisfied that I read this book. It was a singular treat.

Title: Freedom of speech/Banned from our Libraries!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2010
Review: When I became an afficionado of Mark Twain, I began considering which of his books to read next and discovered that our Jefferson County libraries in toto did not stock âPuddân Head Wilsonâ. Of course that fact made me all the more curious and desirous of reading it, so I turned to Amazon. There I found a good assortment of new and used copies to suit my budget.
I have found that I can count on Amazon to stock the books and videos I cannot easily find elsewhere, that items bought from Amazon are always in better shape than I had expected, and that they arrive more quickly than I had been told.
âPuddân Head Wilsonâ is a quirky little book which demonstrates Mark Twainâs imagination and (also quirky) sense of humor. It is very entertaining. I think the race issue should be considered a non-issue as both white and black show their good and bad sides, and Mark Twain definitely sympathized with black people. Any one of these books a person buys should include an âAfterwardâ called âThose Magnificent Twinsâ; it is hilarious!!!
Thank you for being there for me!
