It’s a matter of pragmatism in my mind. Vue goes a bit further with abstraction than React, and thus is much easier for beginners to understand. React has a lead in the professional world, because it started earlier and also allows devs a lot of freedom, and experienced devs know what to do with it. However, give React to intermediates or beginners, and they are quickly lost. Vue is much different in this respect. It offers a smart guidance to build good web components, with less experience.

I will bet you Vue will take over in popularity overall in time. Maybe not in the ranks of all professionals, but certainly overall.
