Mercutio Character Essay

Mercutio Character Essay

An eye doctor who is blind himself, that kind of irony is basically what happened to one of the characters in the play romeo and juliet by william shakespeare. This character’s name is mercutio. He is a static character who dies in the middle of the play while trying to defend his best friend romeo, mercutio is the typical guy who is very comfortable with his friends and almost acts like a joker, but at the same time is very wise in his own sense, but also has an explosive side triggered by the smallest thing, almost like an avalanche. What mercutio doesn’t see is that romeo has fallen in love with juliet, and hes trying to open romeo’s eyes by attempting to convince him that rosaline is the girl he is looking for and not the very own daughter of his greatest enemy, lord capulet. mercutio can’t see that romeo isn’t interested in rosaline at all and the only girl he sees is juliet, who is his true love.

One of mercutio’s sides is that you can have a laugh with him, he makes a lot of mature jokes and is very loud and isnt shy to make a bald statement, in the sense that he’s very straight forward. We can see that when he said” Oh, then, I see Queen Mab hath been with you” (line,53 act 1 scene 4 page 3), “Queen mab” at that time period was a stereotypical prostitutes name or a slang for whore, showing that he is playful, reckless with his words and likes to take the mick out of romeo. Speaking of being annoying or disrespectfully joking around is also seen in act 2 scene 4 page 6 line 57, when he said “It’s not earlier than that, I tell you. The

LUSTY HAND

Again, Mercutio’s language is full of offensive sexual innuendo.

lusty hand of the clock is now pricking noon.” to juliet’s nurse. “Lusty hand” shows once again that mercutio’s language is full of sexual and inappropriate sayings for that time period.

In conclusion, judging by these quotes mercutio has a very inappropriate vocabulary and that helps him character a character, and making him different to others in the sense that he is balder than others.

Mercutio is one of those characters who have many different sides their personality. For instance instance he jokes around playfully, and other times he’s being very arrogant and plane rude, other times he’s in deep talk talking and talking ends on ends. In act 1, scene 4, page 2, line 23 we can see his wisdom when he said “And to sink in it, should you burthen love —

Too great oppression for a tender thing.”, this shows hes understanding of love and its tenderness. Implying that he knows what he’s talking about because the way he said it makes the reader think he’s been through it. Another part of his wisdom or matureness is shown when he was talking to romeo about dreams: “True, I talk of dreams,

Which are the children of an idle brain,

Begot of nothing but vain fantasy,

Which is as thin of substance as the air

And more inconstant than the wind, who woos

Even now the frozen bosom of the north,

And, being angered, puffs away from thence,

Turning his face to the dew-dropping south.” he basically says that dreams are nothing but the work of the brain and a vain fantasy. Once again this evidence shows that mercutio despite being a joker can also be a very wise and realistic person.

The last personality is that he is very explosive, as we saw what happened with tybalt, “Thou art like one of those fellows that, when he enters the confines of a tavern, claps me his sword upon the table and says “God send me no need of thee!” and, by the operation of the second cup, draws it on the drawer when indeed there is no need.” he basically insulting tybalt and provoking him, thus resulting in them drawing swords and mercutio dying because romeo tried to stop them. “I am hurt.

A plague o’ both your houses! I am sped.

Is he gone and hath nothing?”

This quote shows that he is done with both families and that he he used to be on the montagues side more than the capulets but now that he has been cut he curses both families. Thus showing his anger and explosiveness.

This is how a blind eye doctor makes the wrong decisions in trying to open some ones eyes, and losing his ability to see in at the end. All of this evidence shows that mercutio is a joker to his friends and a wise man, but also a very aggressive and ruthless enemy.
