I definitely sympathize with the transparency issue, and how — for all its flaws — at least an average is easy for people to understand. It can be easy to overlook these practical considerations when thinking about problems.

And I wouldn’t enjoy the task of trying to explain this algorithm to non-technical people who are just trying to use your poll feature!
