Ask for help and don’t be afraid
I started a new career path the other week at a new company and its all very exciting. Working for a team that is less than 200 people is especially engaging as it allows everyone to truly leave their mark and allows those who dare to explore and change how the business will operate and grow in the near and distant future. We are growing quickly and we want to hit nearly 300 employees by the end of the year, and as I see this growth and development with virgin eyes I have also noticed that while things need to be done now there is room to learn and make mistakes.
I hit the ground running in my role, the first day I was already heck deep in doing an Excel report and while I have had my fair share of experience with Excel it was not to this level and that established a great learning opportunity. While I learned I also was a bit hesitant to ask for help and more then that make mistakes in front of my manager. I understood that they hired me for a reason but at the same time, I wondered what were their expectations of me. This I soon learned is no way to think about your job and no way to go about life in general. You need to put in effort and do your best but you will make mistakes at times and you will need to ask for help and being accepting of that fact will not only allow you to grow even further but establish that you are part of the team. Looking back at my first two weeks on the job I not only learned but I also opened myself up. Not letting my ego or fear of what others may think get in the way of my work will allow me to not only lead a happier life both in and out of the office but allow me to step up to new challenges.
