Geneseo takes care of Oswego, hands Lakers 20th loss.
SUNY Geneseo traveled to snowy Oswego, NY to take on SUNY Oswego in a SUNYAC conference matchup. The Knights defeated the Lakers 75–41 on Tuesday night.
With the win, Geneseo, 17–6 (12–4), cruises into a tie for second place in the conference, with two games left in the regular season. Oswego, 4–20 (2–15), will likely finish the season in ninth place in the ten team conference.
Geneseo senior point guard, Dana Cohan was arguably the best player on the court for both teams. Cohan led the Knights in scoring with 15 points. She also dished out a game high, 7 assists. Cohan leads the SUNYAC conference in assists per game at 5.3. Allison McKenna, who is in the top 10 in scoring in the league, scored 12 points on 5–7 shooting in 18 minutes. Neither Cohan or McKenna played the fourth quarter.
Geneseo jumped out to a fast start, leading the Lakers 23–10 after the first quarter. The Knights, who hold the No. 1 scoring defense in the SUNYAC conference, troubled the Lakers. Oswego only scored 9 points in the third quarter and 7 points in the fourth while shooting 27 percent from the field. Oswego also turned the ball over 20 times.
Courtney Ameele was a spark plug for the Lakers scoring a game high 17 points. Senior guard Tayler Sorell added 10 points in her last home game of her career. Mary Mazzella had 7 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
Although the season is out of reach, the Lakers will try to win their final regular game on the season against Cortland on Friday, Feb. 19. Mazzella, who is a junior captain, expressed how badly her team wants to win on Friday.
“We’re hungry for a win,” Mazzella said. “It’s against our rival and it’s Tayler’s (Sorell) last game. She’s the only senior on this team so we really want to go out and get a win for her.”
The Lakers haven’t beaten Cortland since the 2012–2013 season, which was Sorell’s freshman year. Oswego beat the Red Dragons three times that year on their way to a 18–9 season, their highest win mark since they went 20–9 in 06–07.
The Lakers will play at Cortland State Feb. 19. That game will start at 5:30 p.m.
Geneseo will host SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Plattsburgh Feb. 19–20.
