The British bestseller Straw Dogs is an exciting, radical work of philosophy, which sets out to challenge our most cherished assumptions about what it means to be human. From Plato to Christianity, from the Enlightenment to Nietzsche and Marx, the Western tradition has been based on arrogant and erroneous beliefs about human beings and their place in the world. Philosophies such as liberalism and Marxism think of humankind as a species whose destiny is to transcend natural limits and conquer the Earth. John Gray argues that this belief in human difference is a dangerous illusion and explores how the

Title: No God, No Progress , No Self
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 4, 2014
Review: STRAW DOGS is different from most books I read in that it is a significant work that deserves a wide audience. It’s relatively short and clearly written.Gray doesn’t believe in God , which is fashionable but you won’t mistake him for a New Atheist. He isn’t hostile to religion and finds the idea that eliminating it opens the way to human liberation, a bad joke. I note that some reviewers think that Gray’s best points are also made by Richard Dawkins and Stephen Pinker , who do a better job.Actually ,I don’t think any of these writers have much in common.Gray is the fiercest critic of the idea of progress I’ve encountered, at least among contemporary writers. He is also an implacable critic of what he calls humanism, something he defines rather broadly. For Gray , it’s not just the usual suspects. Nietzsche,Wittgenstein,Heidegger and the Deconstructionists are also humanists according to Gray. For all of them , Man is the measure of all things.Gray argues that simply isn’t so.There was world before man and will be.after him.I’m an admirer of Nietzsche but enjoyed Grays curt dismissal of the ubermensch, Nietzsche’s great optimistic offering.Gray suggests we give another look at Schopenhauer, who he considers unjustly neglected.

Apparently Terry Eagleton has criticized the book as being more about straw men than straw dogs, arguing that the kind of rationalistic optimism Gray criticizes is long dead.Well ,yes and no.In this day where the fashionable pose is one of knowing irony, people would be afraid and embarrassed to express themselves in terms similar to John Stuart Mill, August Comte or Herbert Spencer.Further any form of rationalism is a bit suspect.Yet, rabid , moralistic progressivism remains rampant .Often,in strange forms. Peruse New Age literature and it’s hard not to be struck by a strong current of thought that insists Humanity is about to undergo some kind of cosmic transformation into some new and I would say utterly incomprehensible higher realm.Skipping the moralistic aspect , take a look at Trans-humanism.In politics, the belief persists that if only we get it right- and we can get it right- that this or that wonderful and permanent outcome will be achieved.Gray , rather Grinch like points out, there are no permanent social or historical outcomes.

So if there is no God,no progress, no self and humanism is bunk , what does Gray leave you with? i can’t resist quoting Leonard Cohen’s STRANGER SONG- not very much , not even laughter. But that’s okay, even if this isn’t quite correct , you need to think about it. You’ve taken too much for granted .If nothing else Gray may help you survive certain particularly tedious conversations.Your talking to someone who you may like and even respect.Actually you may even agree with him. However you simply can’t stand the tone of moralistic certitude in which your being addressed. You begin to think you’re in THE EXORCIST confronting Lind Blair at her most possessed. The words hit you like what comes from Linda’ s mouth and you fire back with a calm world weary critique of progress, humanism and moralism and feel better.Granted the person may never talk to you again but maybe it’s for the best.

Review: Full of surprising ideas, very much eye opening. It is the first time I have encountered a good defense of anti humanism thought. We are not the kings of creation. We are biological deterministic machines, with no free will. We are animals cursed with self knowledge. Technology will progress, humans no.

Title: A dense little book worth reading.
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 23, 2021
Review: Do we humans have a special place in the universe because of our ability to think and reason, or are we mere accidents of nature with, as Gray puts it, “no more meaning than the life of a slime mold”? Are we, in Voltaire’s words, “insects on an atom of mud”? Gray thinks so and advances his thesis doggedly in this book. We are, Gray believes, of no more moment in nature than the straw dogs used in ancient Chinese ritual before their peremptory disposal at the ritual’s end.

Central to the hubris of humans in the past was religion, Gray argues, but today humanism and science hold the same ritualistic place in our baseless presumption as religion, particularly Christianity, once did. Not surprisingly, Schopenhauer holds pride of place in Gray’s philosophical pantheon. That great pessimist, Gray notes, saw that “the Enlightenment was only a secular version of Christianity’s central mistake.”

To Gray human individuality and personhood are delusions, history pointless, the idea of human progress a myth. “If solipsism is the belief that only I exist,” he writes, “Idealism is the belief that only humans exist.” He implicitly scoffs at Brandeis’s famous legal maxim that the remedy for false speech is more speech. “Only someone miraculously innocent of history,” he writes, “could believe that competition among ideas could result in the triumph of truth. Certainly ideas compete with one another, but the winners are normally those with power and human folly on their side.”

To Gray morality is a distraction born from the illusion of autonomy. He quotes the “Lieh-Tzu”: “The highest man at rest is as though dead, in movement is like a machine. He knows neither why he is at rest nor why he is not, why he is in movement or why he is not.” (This view is an interesting contrast to that of Colin Wilson who, as Gary Lachman notes in his biography, “Beyond the Robot: the Life and Works of Colin Wilson”, thought that the highest human purpose was to transcend the rote activities of life that consume so much of our time and so little of our thought. These machine-like activities Wilson called “the robot.”)

Gray accurately notes the calamitous consequences of human overpopulation on a finite planet, but also recognizes why this issue which drives virtually every problem we face is largely unaddressed. “So long as population grows,” he writes, “progress will consist in labouring to keep up with it. There is only one way that humanity can limit its labours, and that is by limiting its numbers. But limiting human numbers clashes with powerful human needs.”

Jim Hoagland wrote in his review of one of my favorite books, John Ralston Saul’s “Voltaire’s Bastards”, that it was “a hand grenade disguised as a book.” John Gray has written another explosive. Eat your Wheaties before you read this dense little book, but if you are looking for a provocative, albeit a bit depressing, book, by all means read it.
