Announcing the State of JavaScript 2018 Data Visualization Contest

Create a cool data visualization for a chance to win a State of JS t-shirt!

Even though we worked on the State of JavaScript results for over a month, there’s still a lot we didn’t have time to include.

For example, we would’ve loved to find out more about usage patterns in different countries, or how specific libraries relate to each other.

And that’s where you come in: we’ve decided to make our dataset freely available to see what cool new visualizations the community can come up with!

And to sweeten the offer a bit, we’ve decided to organize a small contest around this.

The Prize

If you’re picked, you’ll win one of four State of JS x DotJS collaboration t-shirts (two men’s and two women’s), which you can see me wearing here:

The shirt features an illustration of all the most popular JavaScript libraries and frameworks arranged in a periodic table. Bonus points if you can figure out what the numbers correspond to!

And by the way, these t-shirts were printed exclusively for the DotJS conference in Paris, meaning that –at least currently– there’s no other way to get them besides this contest.

Entering the Contest

To enter the contest, just post a link to your work in this GitHub thread.

There’s many ways you can participate, even if you’re not a stats wizard. For example:

  • You could redesign some of our existing charts to make them clearer or more useful.
  • You could reuse our numbers but put your own visual spin on them.
  • You could use our raw data to create entirely new visualizations.

Ranking

We’ll rank entries according to three criteria (in no particular order):

  1. Effort: how much time and care you put into your visualization.
  2. Usefulness: how insightful or useful your work is.
  3. Originality: for works that show out-of-the-box thinking or are just plain fun!

We’ll run the contest until December 20, after which we’ll pick our four winners.

And don’t worry, even though we only have four shirts to give away, we’ll be sure to feature all interesting entries here. We’re excited to see what you come up with!
