I was recently asked what disruption means to me. I scrambled to to provide a half-baked response but now that I’ve deliberated on the idea, here are some thoughts on how I perceive innovation and disruption.

Disruption requires an existing paradigm. A paradigm consists of stakeholders with a dominance hierarchy, a functioning economic system with value being exchanged with money and profits being made, a substantial and identifiable segment of people who are happy to part ways with their hard earned money to acquire the said value, a growing ecosystem and an outdated system of operations.

The purpose of the disruptor is to introduce an alternative system of operations in which the people would be presented with a better value proposition thereby re-directing their monies in the direction of the disruptor. In pursuit of this agenda, the disruptor must create an alternate paradigm where he alone is the supplier of the rendered value. …
