We forget the soldiers and generals that fought the war. Grant wasn’t fighting for profits and Lee wasn’t fighting for slavery. The regular troops were so far away from these concerns that it didn’t even come up. The North really was fighting for the Union and the South fought for its independence.

I say this because it’s what the actual soldiers who died were fighting for. We can talk about the politicians all day and disagree all we want. But the ones that died did so for pretty simple reasons.

Simplifying it down to slavery and money is an overly cynical approach. Yes that was the concern of some parties but it wasn’t the driving force. I do believe Lincoln when he said he would do anything to preserve the Union even if that meant accepting slavery.
