Recently our very own Jen Connah & Daria Olszewska attended the UX Crunch. For ECOM, we pride ourselves in constantly researching about the sectors we work in. So without further ado, here’s what we’ve learnt from the speakers present.

Tom De Gay

Head of Design — Quantemplate

Tom delved into shared ideas and principles between UI and UX. Translating UX and UI into an easier way of understanding. Ikea is seen as a great example for navigating the store layout. Mentioning signage systems and translating that into UX for a site. He also highlighted designers can forget they are designing for a real user, it needs to be practical.

Sean McSharry

UX consultant — DXC Technology

Sean went into detail of what should be included in the entire UX process, and then how UI design is later needed.Mcsharry also stated the UX process is starting to take over other roles. Stating that Business Analysts comes under the UX designers role. End objectives being: Be inspired, learn to speak business and be up to date with cultural change. Leadership without authority and success is determined on how good of designer you want to be.

Stewart Dean

Lead User Experience Designer — Mendeley Data

Dean mentioned an example that seems to be used a lot by junior designers. He gave precise information on what comes under each role. Further explaining how the UX and the UI designer will cross over but not work together.

UX= the problem/ UI= implementations. The iceberg analogy is that the tip is everything you see on the surface (UI) and in the water: UX/research/ scope/ service/journeys.

A final note

All speakers had similar thoughts on UI and UX. Highlighting the importance of work collaboration, but also stressing the depth needed to be a successful UX designer. Research is essential.
