Installing iOS 10 the right way

iOS 10 is releasing today. There are too many well decorated articles describing the features and letting us play around with them for the rest of the day ahead.
Few things that make iOS 10 way too appealing : iMessage overhaul, Raise to wake, Notifications, new 3D touch gestures, revamped Photos and Music apps, Control Center. What if you just hit the update button and let it do everything by itself? What if the upgrade / installation doesn’t go the right way, or it shows the dreaded “Connect to iTunes” and end up losing the data which is not synced with iCloud?
To save yourself from such misery, you may want to follow these steps to enjoy the shiny new features and fresh haptic feedbacks. There are few things which have been mentioned based on my experiences of upgrading the iOS (iPhone OS before) since the beginning of time.

Check if your device is compatible

You’re need to check your device is compatible with iOS 10 :
iPhone 5 and above.
iPad 4th generation / iPad Mini 2 and above.

WAIT

I know, I know! It’s tough to avoid all the posts of all new features and your urge to try it out, I’d suggest holding off until first iteration of the update is released. Apple’s software release is pretty good but NOT perfect because every device has a different set of settings, apps, usage, so it makes no sense to take the risk and take the pain of downgrading to iOS 9 again.
Also you’ll have to consider the age of the hardware. iPhone 5 ran significantly smoother on iOS 10 betas, but until you check the final reviews [which I’ll post later], you’ll always want to be on the safer side.

Passwords?

Unless you use 1Password or have a good memory of the passwords, make sure your app logins, Apple ID passwords work.

Remove Unwanted Apps

New apps can be very appealing until a certain period of time. It’s a good practice, [often done by users having 16GB iPhones] to delete the unwanted apps / games that you didn’t use for more than a month. These take up local storage space that could come in handy later on, in this case, you’ll free up space if you’re planning to update using over the air update. These apps will also be taking up iCloud storage space. Just long-press on the app’s icon until it starts jiggling around, and a little cross appears at the corner. Tap the cross, confirm the deletion.

BACKUP

This is THE MOST IMPORTANT step! Just in case the upgrade fails backups will always be handy.
There are two ways to backup your iOS device: iCloud or iTunes.
I prefer to have them both.
iCloud Backup can be enabled by navigating through Settings > iCloud > Backup.
This can be tricky, if you have large photo libraries and you’re running out of iCloud storage, you might consider buying extra storage.

If you don’t want to use iCloud Backup or pay for more storage, you should definitely create an iTunes backup.
Do this by plugging your device into your computer, opening iTunes, clicking the devices button, then choosing Back Up Now.

App Compatibility

Most developers have been already on the final stages of the optimization / updates to make it work on the latest iOS. It’s not surprising to see that the app updates for iOS 10 are already out. Yet, not all apps would be compatible to work flawlessly right at the day of iOS 10 release. If there are any apps you use daily and that you can’t live without, check to confirm that they’re compatible with iOS 10 before you upgrade.

App Updates for iOS 10

Update

i. Over-The-Air update

One of the most convenient way to perform updates on your device to a major iOS update is over-the-air update. You can simply navigate to Settings > General > Software Update. Make sure you have sufficient storage space to update the device. Consider backing up the camera roll by backing up to your computer or iCloud / Dropbox / Google Drive, etc. as a last resort if you can’t get enough storage space. As part of the installation process, apps will be automatically deleted and reinstalled if it’s necessary. Then again, this is tricky too, this might take longer if you have slower internet connection.
Tip : Make sure your phone is fully charged before you install the update.

Over the air software update

My preferred method of updating to a major iOS update is iTunes restore. This is a safe bet. Make sure your copy of iTunes is updated to the latest version.
This method backs up the entire iPhone by default. This is more convenient if you have a slower internet connection / limited bandwidth or have multiple iPhones [Same Model].
It will ask you to enter password for the Apple ID to disable Find my iPhone.
After the device is restored to the latest version, you can restore from the previous backup.

iTunes Restore

Few Tips :

0. You may want to password protect the iTunes backups. On the summary screen, select Encrypt backup. There is no way to recover your information or turn off Encrypt Backup if you lose or forget the password.
1. DO NOT attempt to shut down the device while it’s upgrading or unplug the cable while restoring from iTunes as it’s not a good thing to interrupt the process. The screen might appear frozen but it’s normal that the device takes 10–20 min to complete the process.
2. Once the entire process of update / data restoration is completed, you can reset all settings for fresh settings and can reconfigure all the settings. You’ll have to reconnect to all the WiFi hotspots again, set your alarm clock, adjust app-based location services, app refresh, etc.
3. Update all the apps to the latest version as they will be optimized to work on iOS 10.

Hope this helps :-)
