The sheer beauty of American Gods.
I watched American Gods at Midnight ( via The Starz app) and I am still in awe of the series. As a fan of creator Bryan Fuller, I had high hopes. I knew that the story was going to be brutal and beautiful and it exceeded my expectations. Words cannot describe how awesome the show is. I am more impartial than the average viewer. I’m a big fan of Bryan Fuller’s vision. It’s a big influence on my feeling about his shows. Yet, when you watch the show you will see what I mean.
Ricky Whittle does a good job as lead character Shadow Moon. Shadow Moon is a felon awaiting release from prison after a three year stint. He recieved a phone call from his wife Laura (Emily Browning). It gives him hope and makes everything a little brighter. Unfortunately, he ends up released early because tragedy strikes. That tragedy turns out to be even more complicated than he thought it was. Either way Shadow is a sad soul. He on his way back home after a snafu with his flight ends up sitting next to a man named Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). He’s such quite a character and has a laid back control of everyone and everything. Wednesday offers Shadow a job at it takes a bit before he agrees to be his bodyguard. Shadow meets the world’s tallest leprechaun Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber). They engage in a pretty brutal brawl and Shadow emerged victorious. He could not remember what happened when he woke up.
Actress Yetide Badaki nailed her role as the goddess Bilquis. Her character’s introduction scene mirrors the scene in the book. I attended the American Gods Apple Soho event two weeks ago. Though the panel could not tell us much about said scene they gave the impression that it was a good one. After reading the book written by author Neil Gaiman and seeing the scene unfold on the show, I am in awe. It was like nothing that I had seen before. I am looking forward to seeing more of Bilquis in the series. I learned that her part is longer in the series. American Gods is going to be mind blowing. It’s been almost 24 hours since I watched the premiere on my Starz app and I’m still not over how. great that pilot was. I’m ready to see episode 2.
American Gods premieres April 30th at 9pm on Starz. It is also available on the Starz app now.
