All they ask for is Love — Visit to Duang Prateep Foundation

This weekend was indeed a productive and satisfying one as my family and I visited the Duang Prateep Foundation. As a kid, I always remember my parents taking me there once every few months to appreciate the value of life and see how the under privileged kids lived with minimal facilities.

Duang Prateep Foundation was founded by Prateep Ungsongtham who was amongst the Bangkok slum dwellers in the Klong Toey area.She spent only four years at primary school but this was enough to show her that education could transform lives. As a 12-year-old worker she began to save her meagre wages to pay for secondary education at night school. Now, after 38 years of continuous service, the Duang Prateep Foundation operates over 20 projects in the fields of education, child abuse, and welfare of the elderly and slum youths.

We had approached Duang Prateep with the intent of spending the afternoon with 88 kids and had arranged for lunch followed by some activities. The afternoon started off with a dance performance, some games and I had the chance to exchange a few words with the kids. It was indeed overwhelming to have interacted with the kids from the slum area around. We had a chance to personally serve the children lunch and also sit amongst them throughout. Having a conversation with a few of them during lunch time, made me realize of how we ignore the small things in our life in greed of attaining more than we need.

The innocence and smile the kids had on their face was heart-warming. After all, all they seek for is love! Before we walked off the hall, it was a very touching moment to see one of the kid come up to my sister and hugged her for all that we had done for them this afternoon.

Helping a person will not necessarily change the world. But it can change the world for that person.
