The impact of AI is significant in industries where there is a abundance of high-quality data. The ability to learn and predict is highly valuable in many scenarios. The challenge lies in making sure that the technology and systems in place are able to effectively gather and utilize large amounts of high-quality data.

The advancement of AI has been rapid and it is expected to continue in 2023. New products that utilize generative AI to create unique content have already been introduced, such as DALL-E, which can generate images and videos based on a simple text prompt. However, with this progress comes new challenges such as deep fakes and the need for updated legal and ethical frameworks.

AI in combination with social media has also raised concerns about detection and content moderation. Despite these challenges, AI is expected to bring many benefits such as making it easier to use, more helpful in the workplace and safer overall. In 2023, data and analytics professionals should keep an eye out for three key AI trends:

1. AI will become increasingly accessible

AI is becoming an increasingly important factor for cloud providers to differentiate themselves. For instance, the use of generative AI by companies like DeepMind’s Alpha Tensor, optimize other AI code to run on a target server with maximum efficiency by discovering efficient algorithms for tasks such as matrix multiplication, allowing cloud vendors to compete on cost or performance. This is a significant advancement in the field.

Although this may not be visible to the average user, it is significant as it makes AI more accessible to the masses, and also has a tangible impact on business operations. It is expected that this trend will also be seen in smaller technology companies as well.

2. AI Commercialization

In 2023, we can expect to see more enterprise products that utilize generative AI entering the market, specifically in the speech technology space. The potential use cases for this technology are vast and largely untapped, including in gaming where players can mimic their in-game character’s voice, or in virtual meetings where people with speech impairments can make their voice more easily understandable.

The technology of speech-to-speech (S2S) has the ability to transform conversations in real-time and at scale, making it particularly valuable for customer service operations. For example, contact center agents can use generative AI to understand customers from around the world more clearly, helping them to solve problems quickly and improving their overall performance.

3. Advancement of AI Ethics

While AI has the potential to provide numerous benefits, major legal and ethical challenges must yet be resolved. A recent lawsuit against GitHub’s AI-powered coding assistant, Copilot, is a great example. The assistant was taught on large amounts of open source code, but did not give credit to its inventors as required by the licenses, resulting in a violation of copyright law.

This was the first class-action lawsuit in the United States against an AI system, but it is likely to be just the beginning as AI becomes more incorporated into our daily lives. Companies and governments will become increasingly demanding about ensuring safe and responsible activities. We may expect increased transparency in circumstances like this, as well as lessons learned from past missteps.

Despite the fact that AI continues to create issues for attorneys and ethicists, progress can be made through debates and actions linked to ethical AI use.

As AI becomes more popular in enterprise goods and more broadly available to the general public, this trend toward more accountability is important. AI will need to be closely monitored to ensure that it is used appropriately.
