The 31 Billion dollar problem that can be fixed

Over $31 billion worth of food is wasted every single year in Canada.

Let that statement to sink in. that’s $31 billion sitting in the trash cans, garbage bins & dumpster across Canada.

A lot of that is perfectly good food that just never made the made it. Maybe it was too ugly to be showcased at a super market. Maybe it was difficult to sell the inventory before the expiry date. Maybe you bought too much at the store. Whatever and whomever the case maybe, a lot of the food ends up getting thrown away for the wrong reasons.

Theres been plenty of success tackling the problem across the world. France banned supermarkets from throwing away food, requiring supermarkets to donate unsold food. There is also Wefood in Denmark which sells surplus food at their brick and mortar store. What about the food sharing app OLIO in the US, allowing users to share their food.

With all the innovation what’s happening in the Canadian market place?

Enter NightFoodie, a platform where consumers can get access to timely discount food deals anytime and anywhere. Our goal is to reduce surplus food waste while giving consumers amazing savings. So consumers can eat more and feel even better.

The best way to make change happen is to hit the pain points that consumers feel on a daily basis. Food waste still isn’t a major topic of discussion in daily households however everyone loves saving money. We wanted to leverage discounts to tackle the surplus food issue.

All the solutions listed above are amazing initiatives but the best place to make an impact starts with you. Try this for the next week, finish all the food on your plate, that means every single item. I will be joining in on the challenge myself using #finishedfood on Instagram, so feel free to share your stories and pictures.

Till next time,
