When you’re the boss, you want to do your best to effectively run your organization. If you do your job well, then your employees will do their jobs well, too. Whether you’re new to the job or just want to improve your performance, there are several common strategies used by good bosses that you can implement in your workplace.

Here are some tips to be a better boss:

Set clear expectations

If you want your employees to do as well as they can, then your main goal should be to make your expectations very clear. If there’s something you want or expect, then be very clear about it instead of sugar-coating your real expectations, even if they’re lofty. For example, if you want your employees to produce ten reports per week, make it clear that this is what you expect instead of just telling them to keep up the hard work, and then later giving them poor performance reviews.

Discover your employees’ strengths

Most bosses never really understand what their employees’ strengths truly are. Instead, they end up projecting the strengths they’d like to see. Better bosses take the time to ask and understand what their strengths are, so they can identify the best way to put them to use.

Trust your team

Have you had that annoying micro-managing boss that checks on your every move at least 10 times a day? Always put yourself in your employee’s shoes; you would feel demotivated and feel that you will never be able to work on your own. Many employees feel more inspired when they can create their own schedule and work around it. Make sure you give your employees time to breathe and freedom to work at their own pace.

Listen to your employees

Better bosses listen to staff without interrupting them, allowing the staff to fully articulate their issue and feel they have been heard and understood. It correspondingly builds trust and confidence between the boss and subordinates. Listening shows empathy for staff especially if the staff is sharing personal information that is affecting their work output. Also, listening to feedback about current processes and proposed new initiatives provides valuable insights and data that can save the company time and money in terms of efficiency.
