Wifi Routers.. Guide for a better and stable connection for beginners

This blog is about what made me upgrade my router and the basics you should know before you buy or upgrade one. So lets get started..

Everyone has a router and like many of us I never put in much thought to it. Due to security issues companies are facing, they have implemented speed and browsing restrictions with their vpn. So having good speed and more stable connection has become very important in day to day work life for us.

Here are the 2 main things to consider in a router for best experience.

  1. band of the router:
Generally available base model routers which are cheap have only one frequency of communication - 2.4Ghz. The problem with this is if you live in apartments or in a dense colony of houses you will have many router connections being detected in your device and all of them might be using 2.4Ghz band for their connection. All of those connections will be interfering with each other effecting your connection quality and speed. A router with 5Ghz band will have a freely available band to communicate with your devices, giving you close to ideal speeds, a con is that the range is small for a 5Ghz this also reduces the chances of interference to 0. So having a dual band router which supports both 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz is better giving you very good speeds with less interference in close range in the 5Ghz band and compensating the long connection range with 2.4Ghz band. I personally observed this difference to be great.
  2. Stuck with a 2.4Ghz for any reason? Check for the channels.
Not a problem, even now you can take advantage of the ignorance of other router owners. Even in 2.4Ghz there are channels which are used for your communication. Generally the channel setting is set to auto mode and all the connections interfere a lot, you can change the channels of your router from its settings to a less occupied one, which improves your connection stability but the speed loss will be there as per the nature of 2.4Ghz band.

In the above image you can see that the router connection omni uses channels 7 to 13 (manually set by me)where as the remaining use 1 to 8 (as their channel usage is left in auto mode)

Note: you can check the network graphs and connection strengths from wifi analyzer app.

Thats all for this post. please comment any queries or corrections.

Hope you have a good and stable wifi signal from now on.
