Why can’t we just charge for open source infrastructure?

Nadia, great post!
I feel the cat is out of the bag in terms of pricing OSS infra. The basic building blocks are going to be open source (and free) now and in the future. I believe enterprise customers are going to insist on at least Open Core and in some other cases the entire product is open and free (e.g. Kubernetes, Rancher).
Most of the popular infra tech is venture backable if they follow the Open Core model (Docker, Cloudera, Mesosphere, CoreOS are great examples). For the rest of the OSS projects there exist a need for an innovative model to support the developers while allowing them to pursue their passion of contributing to open source.
