60 years of marriage: 5 lessons

My parents celebrate 60 years of marriage today August 19, 2021.

I am grateful to witness it and think about 5 lessons I have learned:

It takes work. Especially through the years.

Have a few big ones and put effort into making those big ones special.

1: Marriage is a commitment more important than a job.

A mistake younger people make is thinking couples have to have EVERYTHING in common. This is not realistic. My parents love traveling, a couple of favorite tv shows and eating dinner together. He likes military stuff and she doesn’t. She likes watching jewelry shows and he doesn’t.

Come together strong on the common ones. Be easy on the ones we don’t have in common.

2. Couples don’t have to have everything in common.

Every couple has disagreements. A cool down place IN THE HOME is better than going out to relax.

He has a man cave. She has a room where she can watch tv, etc. So when friction happens they both have somewhere to go.

3. Have places to cool down.

Younger people make the mistake of ALWAYS being around each other. A break is needed. My Dad had military jobs away from home. Even if our job doesn’t take us from home, get away once and a while. Absence makes the heart miss another.

4. Miss each other.

People who stop learning are no longer interesting. My parents are always watching some documentary or reading some book and then they discuss it. Learners are interesting.

5. Be lifelong students.

There is much more but these are the ones I can think of.

Who knows… Maybe I will write a book about the many lessons I have learned? Haha

Hope this helps others,

Sakani
