WORK IS WORSHIP
Sonu was a hard working man living in a village. He lived with his mother and father in a tatched hut. They had become very old and could not survive alone anymore. Neighborhood was filled with all kinds of people ranging from Gundas and thieves to beggars and smugglers. Sonu used to wake up at 4.00 every morning and come out of his tatched hut. He gets freshened up near a river bank, takes bath and comes back to the hut. All the neighbors used to laugh at him, " Hey foolish Sonu, you wake up every morning at 4.00 as if you had to go to some important work and earn money. Funny guy." Sonu used to say nothing, but pass a wide smile.
Sonu was a different man. He was truthful, kind, obedient, polite, sincere and honest man. Wicked villagers never understood him, as they are neither a gem like Sonu, nor do they ever knew what a real gem is.
His day starts at 4.00 am. He gets ready by 5.00 am. He feeds his mother and father with some fruits, vegetables and water. He keeps all the necessary things beside his parents so that they do not face any difficulty. He leaves the hut at 5.00 am, rows a boat and goes to a nearby village for farming. Wages were paid daily, but not enough to feed him and his family. He used to work in the farms till noon. He then rows a boat and goes to another village for washing vessels, cleaning houses and clothes. He used to be paid on daily basis. Many a times, after he finished doing all his work, he was said that he will be paid tomorrow, as they do not have change at home. He never asked anything from anyone, he just nods his head and comes out. Now it is already evening and still he does not have enough money to feed his family and buy medicinal herbs.
10 miles far, there used to be another village, but he had to go by walk as there is no stream here to row a boat. There is a vegetable and fruit market which is always crowded. He used to go there and clean all garbage from the stores and earn some pennies. He then used to wallk still further to a town, where he is appointed as a server in a small tea shop for the evening time alone. He was paid a penny for serving 5 glasses of tea, at times only 3 or 4 people used to have tea and in such a case, he was not paid at all, still he works without any complaint.
Now it is dark already. He has to walk out of the town to the village, then row the boat and cross two villages to reach his sweet home. On his way home he also had to buy medicinal herbs for his old parents and some food.
His parents never complained about taste, his parents never complained that they were left alone in the tatched hut the whole day, they never complained that villagers are taunting. They used to welcome him with a wide smile, happy tears and a warm hug everyday after seeing their sweated son reaching the hut safely.
Neither Sonu's parents, Nor Sonu himself ever complained to God about their fortune or fate, they accepted the life as it is and were happy to live with the conditions what so ever.
Sonu and their parents lived together in the hut and spent their time praising God and his powers. Sonu worked all days of the week. No festival holidays, no weekends.
One fine mornning a traveller, was resting near the river bank when Sonu was coming back from his bath. Sonu, went near him and requested him to come to their hut and take rest. He offered him fruits and water and spreaded a mat for the traveller to have a seat. Traveller was very much pleased of their hospitality and was taken away by their way of life. He said that, he travelled many parts of India, but never came accross such a good family. He said, they three are the richest in this world, for they had all the divine wealth. "God never sees money, but he does see how good you are. God has given me the opportunity to serve his beloved children and hope thats what had made me to come to this village. Yesterday night when i came to this village, i met not a single person who atleast gave me a glass of water. I walked all night and reached this river bank, thinking about the villagers attitude fell fast asleep and the very next morning God has sent me to this pretty house."
Sonu said, " Sir, All of us are his beloved children, and he lives with us always. The fragrance of flowers can be felt only when our nose is kept open and not when it is closed."
Traveller says, "Very true. I will live with you for 10 days. I know weaving. I will teach you how to weave wool and also baskets and hats. I will send you all the raw materials needed. You can weave sweaters and scarfs during winters, hats during summers and baskets during rainy seasons. You can sell them in the market and earn money."
Sonu said, "Thank you very much for your kindness sir. But i am not having enough money to buy raw materials from you. if you don't mind, i will be your assistant and help selling the items for you."
Traveller said, " No Sonu. One should learn how to make a delicious soup, any body can sell it. When the time comes for you to offer a delicious soup to someone special and you do not have soup at your home, you can offer them, only if you know how to make the delicious soup. So Sonu, do not worry about money. Please consider my offer as a token of love for the hospitality you provide me for these 10 days."
Sonu's parents, with happy tears in their eyes nod their head asking Sonu to accept he offer. Sonu soon learns how to weave different kinds of things in those 10 days.
On the 10th day, traveller was packing his things for his journey back to his town, Sonu was cooking food for his parents and the traveller, His parents were resting on the cot, it was a bright morning and cold breeze was blowing. Suddenly he heard sounds of bells and Sonu ran out to see what it was. He was amazed to see a bright light coming from the sky and a voice behind.
"My dear Sonu, I have tested you in all ways, you had been patient and always happy, so were your parents. I am very much pleased with your devotion towards your work. Today is the 10th day for the traveller, he is none but a messanger of mine. You have not only pleased me, but have also pleased my messanger, hence you will be blessed with all kinds of prosperity. Your parents will reach my kingdom soon and serve me. You, your family and your descendants will always be blessed with special grace of mine and will reach to my Kingdom without any difficulty. Live long Sonu." and the light and bells disappear. He rushes back to the house and traveller has already vanished. Sonu thanks God for his continued Grace and Mercy.
His parents have become healthy and fleshy once again and they all lived togather happily ever after in a small home built by Sonu himself.
