Funny. I’ve thought a lot about this as well and arrived at the same conclusion (perhaps envy) regarding the immediacy of visual art! Generally speaking, there seems to me an inverse relationship between immediacy and effort/engagement. Reading text takes more effort than watching a film or listening to a song. The latter may have a more immediate (and powerful) effect on my thoughts and emotions, but in forcing story though the filter of language and requiring the mind to co-create by forming images, text-only tends to have a more lasting, and potentially transformative, impact. But as a writer, I am biased!
