About Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival celebrating the birth of the elephant-headed God, Ganesha. The festival falls in August or September according to the Gregorian calendar and is marked by devotees worshipping idols of Ganesha in homes or marquees. Notably, Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha as the God of New Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacles as well as the god of wisdom and intelligence. It is celebrated with a lot of pomp and glory in the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa, Telangana, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh.

Excitement level 101

Just like Dahi Handi, the Ganesh Utsav celebration in Symbiosis Institute of Digital and Telecom Management (SIDTM) was also a new experience of this festival for me. This celebration is a little uncommon in North India, so I never got a chance to celebrate it. But when I saw the excitement of my batchmates from Maharashtra, I got into the same mode. I used to see so many Ganesha idols by the roadside when I used to go for the Student Interaction Program (SIP) of SIDTM and they all looked so pretty. I couldn’t stop admiring the craftsmanship of the idol makers. Every idol used to be perfect in its way. On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, all the girls got a chance to adorn their beautiful traditional attires. And the boys, to look a little different from all the usual days. No offense but girls do have a lot many options when it comes to clothes. We performed the pooja of the beautiful Ganesha idol that is shown in the picture above. After that everyone got their pictures clicked as that is unbiasedly the most important part of any celebration these days. Even though we had multiple submissions the next day, SIDTM celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi in full fervor.

The beautiful Orange Night

This Ganesh Utsav, I got to do something from my bucket list. I am a very pathetic dancer and it was a dream for me to perform somewhere. So, when we were told that we had an opportunity to perform Lezim (a folk-dance form, from the state of Maharashtra), I grabbed the opportunity instantaneously. The Lezim practice was my daily stress buster. It was so much fun. And most importantly I did not suck at it. On the Ganesh Visarjan day, we did our power-packed performance for the gathering. Dancing to the tunes of dhol was mesmerizing. The performance was much appreciated by all. We also had a procession after that in which we danced our hearts out.

The air of Symbiosis was colored with Gulaal and the festive spirit. This night is by far my best memory at SIDTM and I can’t wait for Lord Ganesha to visit our campus soon.

By the way, I was also nominated for the title of Lezim Queen. I did not win, but at least I ticked something off my bucket list like a boss.
