What is Palm Sunday?

It is the Sunday before the Easter which marks the beginning of the holy week, which is also known as Passion Sunday. It marks that significant day when Jesus entered Jerusalem as a king.

Jesus told his disciples — ‘as you go into the city, you will find a colt there which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here’. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’

As they brought it to him, he entered the town on it where the crowd of people laid the palm leaves and their cloaks across the road as a symbol of royalty and they praised him singing and saying “:Hosanna” , “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” , “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”. As he went on into the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace — but now it is hidden from your eyes.”

So, what does this signifies?

1. It signifies the fulfillment of the old testament prophecy.

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey. — Zechariah 9:9

2. People accepted him as the King, The Lord’s Son, MESSIAH by singing and praising him. Though the people thought he was an earthly king and would end the roman rule, God had different plans to bring true salvation to those who believe in him.

3. Triumphal entry of Jesus on a foal indicates the humbleness and that he is the king of peace.

4. Jesus wept seeing Jerusalem, he grieved looking at man’s sins, selfishness, foolishness showing his love for the mankind.

5. Finally, the Palm Sunday signifies the peace and salvation because he entered the city as a king of peace, unarmed, to sacrifice himself for the goodness of people who believe in him.

There is so much to be grateful and to feel gratitude about in this week. This is the time to prepare our hearts for the anguish of his crucifixion and the joy of his resurrection.
