Borehole drilling in progress.

Thinking of getting a borehole?

Are you considering acquiring a borehole but don’t really know how it works or where to start? Well, you are not alone. In the prevailing hard economic times, a borehole seems the reasonable step to take for affordable sustainable water supply. Water rates have been on the rise over time with the current high of Ksh 200 flat rate for users consuming 0–6m3 monthly. Below we have summarized the steps for you below.

1. Hydro Geological Survey

It’s the first and most important step in borehole drilling. Using a combination of geophysical methods, a geologist examines the subsurface conditions of your locality or region to establish the ground water potential. The report generated after the survey is submitted to WARMA and WRUA and drilling permits issued thereafter.

2. Drilling

For this step, engage a reliable driller for the job. It entails drilling of an open well to recommended depth, installation of plain and screen casing, well development, test pumping and water quality analysis. A drillers report is generated on completion and is to be submitted to a borehole pumping service provider for sizing of borehole equipment.

3.Borehole Equipping

This involves selection of suitable pumping equipment either solar powered or Grid powered. A competent technician is required for electrical connections to avoid loss of equipment. This is key as warranty terms are dependent on this. During this stage Reticulation works for water storage is also executed.

Boreholes boosts the value of the property it lies on. Aside from that, borehole water has many health benefits as the water is free of contamination and most important boreholes cuts down the cost of acquiring potable water by more than 80%.
