Did you know that the average smartphone user has about 65 apps on their phone? After a quick check, I count 72 on my own phone. Apps have become essential to our lives and we’re spending more time using them than ever. In Q4 of 2012, consumers spent approximately 23 hours and two minutes per month using apps. Fast forward two years to Q4 2014, and that number has grown to 37 hours and 28 minutes per month for a 63% increase! However, despite the increase in time spent engaging in apps, usage remained flat on the amount of apps they use each month: approximately 26 or 27 apps.

So what does this tell us? The data suggests that even though there are literally millions of apps available in app stores, relatively few are being downloaded and used regularly. Those downloaded apps that don’t get deleted or forgotten are rewarded with heavy engagement. Competition is stiff, and once you’ve got the download, customers expect the app to deliver as promised. So how can you deliver an app experience that makes people want to download, keep, and use your app daily? What can you create that people will enjoy using? These are just the kind of questions you’ll want to keep in mind when you start designing your app.

What the E-book Is About

Anatomy of a Mobile App: 8 Key Layers Inside Every Great App divulges how to build a business app that people actually want to use. This e-book is designed to help you think through design aspects that should be taken into consideration when building a mobile app to deliver an amazing experience to employees, partners or customers. You may know that “keeping the end-user in mind” is key, but we’ll guide you through the process step-by-step.

The Structure of the E-book

This e-book is divided into 8 parts, taking you layer by layer from the back end to the front end and everything in between. Here’s a quick overview of the first 3 parts:

Back End Data
It all starts with the information that your app needs to draw on. Where will this data come from and how will it be accessed?

Collaboration
Starting thinking collaboration early on. Who is using this app? Will it be integrated with social networks?

Business Logic
Establish the rules your app has to follow in order to use information and keep business moving. What’s your workflow? What’s relevant and what’s not?
