The best way to “win” an argument is to separate the person from their position. When we attack the person, we’ll never get through to their beliefs.

When you have one side that believes “the personal is political,” this separation is all but impossible. It’s difficult to keep from going nasty yourself when the other side believes the ad hominem is a valid style of argumentation, and makes liberal use of it.
