Why adopt?

Dogs are mans best friend. Tons of cats and dogs each year are “culled” and killed many in terrible ways- such as being shot or mass poisoned, because there are too many strays in Morocco, and fear of rabies prevails. By adopting, you’re not only saving a life, but also getting a great companion.

Many people are also concerned with puppy mills- factory-style breeding facilities that profit lots and think of the animal’s welfare less. Dogs bought from pet stores, at flea markets, or other places are often dogs from puppy mills. Puppy mills will continue to be in service until people stop supporting them- the best way to do so is to stop buying their dogs. By adopting from SFT, you’re 100% certain that the dog isn’t from a puppy mill.

The best reason to adopt is that you will change an animal’s whole world forever.

Why Adopt From Morocco Instead of a Local Shelter?

The cats and dogs from SFT Tangier are animals that were rescued from the streets- they didn’t ask to be born and since the country has no history of sterilizing stray dogs, they continue to breed. Animals who appear in shelters are often at the fault of the human- they were bought as puppies, abandoned by the humans who purchased them when they changed their minds, and then got dumped in a shelter. We as humans can do better than this- adopt, don’t stop.

Adopting from SFT is actually cheaper than adopting from your local rescue. All of the dogs are neutered and vaccinated before they are put up for adoption at no additional cost to you.

All SFT dogs are a mixed breed known as “Beldi”. This means that each dog is intrinsically unique in the world, they are hardy, strong, loyal, and have overall fewer health problems than many purebred breeds. We have lots of adoptable kittens, cats, pups, dogs and disabled dogs at our sanctuary!

Process of adopting

How to choose which animal you want

Step 1- Find the pawfect match. We have lots of adoptable pups, kittens, dogs, and cats at our sanctuary! Look at on our Facebook page! If you would like to inquire about a particular animal, fill out our inquiry form here.

Step 2- Fill out the adoption form. An interview may also happen in order to ensure that our animals are going to the best possible homes.

Step 3- Health. For cats going to Canada, it’s necessary that they be three months old minimum and have a rabies vaccination (with proof of the vaccine). It’s great because once the cat arrives, there is no need to quarantine! For dogs going to Canada, dogs must be at least three months old with a rabies vaccination. If the dog is under three months old, there must be a proof of age (which can be found in the vet book we send animals with) and they will be required to be vaccinated against rabies once they reach three months old. However, this is fantastic because unlike the U.S. and Europe, the dog can leave right away for its forever family! All animals must also have a health certificate from our vet in Morocco. For all information regarding adopting to Canada, check out this link!

Step 4- Travel. The dog will be flown out via airline from Morocco (likely Casablanca since they have direct flights to the US and Canada) to an airport in North America. Check out our list of available airlines below.

Step 5- Enjoy your animal enjoy their furever home!

Airlines that allow animals

  • Royal Air Maroc has direct flights from Casablanca to Montreal Canada. Find out their information about traveling with animals here.
  • Air Canada has direct flights from Casablanca to Montreal.

Pricing

We ask for a modest adoption fee to cover the costs of travel preparation to exit Morocco. For adoptions in North America, the overall cost is 200 Euros (roughly 150 British Pounds) in addition to the travel costs (the dog’s “plane ticket”, their travel crate, etc.). Regarding travel costs, how the dog is traveling and the final destination of the dog changes the overall travel costs. Get in contact with us to find out more.

Who helps with the adoption process?
