Trust your Struggle

Social media has confused my generation between aspiration and admiration.

The greatest age of connectivity which mankind has ever witnessed comes with great potential for remarkable work ; but it also comes with a few invisible problems. All of us have grown aspiring to be like our idols and social media has not helped our cause by glamorizing the lives of a few — whose lives we want — but we do not see the years and years of perseverance and hard work behind it all.

The problem with aspiring to be your idols is that they themselves did not pursue in the footsteps of their heroes. Bill Gates didn’t have a Bill Gates to aspire. Mark Zuckerberg had to walk in his own unique path to find his greatness.

“Our hero’s vision for the future is already a past ; that is the reason why all the greatest people are already taken”

Social media has confused my generation between aspiration and admiration. We aspire to be like Bill Gates because his life is unlike others , but most of us are not willing to give what it takes to walk the journey of his hardships, painstaking struggle, sacrifices he had to make or simply his passion for his craft. This is because that is not our journey, it’s the journey of our heroes. You don’t have the passion for design or art like Steve Jobs, yet we want to be like him when we see the cars, the lifestyle, the homes and the holidays. We tend to forget about the unbelievable journey of these visionaries like Richard Branson, but we only see the end destination.

You are not Mark Zuckerberg, you are you , and we can not find happiness in our lives until we accept that we can not have anyone’s life but our very own. If we value this little fact and focus on ourselves than our life will be enough.

Visionaries are to be admired not imitated. Our idol’s had uniqueness as their power, the conviction to dis-harmonize, the confidence to disagree, and the bravery to persevere. We celebrate them for their vision for pocket computers, driver-less cars or a more connected world ; It is worth reminding ourselves that these ideas did not come from those who conformed and accepted the status quo, it only came from these visionaries

Find your self. Find your passion. Find your Why !

Our hero’s vision for the future is already a past ; that is the reason why all the greatest people are already taken. Imitating great people is a sure shot way to become no one. The only great person you can become is the greatest version of yourself , and once people see you triumph and become that person , oddly enough, other people will then make the same mistake of being you.
