What is a kidney and pancreas transplant?

Combination kidney and pancreas transplantation is used to treat patients who have developed renal failure as a consequence of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Candidates for kidney and pancreas transplantation may be on dialysis or may require dialysis in the near future.

Do you think I’d be a good candidate for a double transplant?

If you have Type I diabetes and are experiencing kidney failure, or if your doctor suspects kidney failure is on the way, a double transplant (combined kidney and pancreas) may be an option for you. Based on your medical condition, overall health, and the results of a pre-transplant evaluation, your doctor and transplant surgeon can determine if a double transplant is necessary. A complete physical examination, consultations with a transplant coordinator and surgeon, and a battery of tests, including heart and bladder evaluations, are all part of a pre-transplant evaluation.

Where did I get my new kidney and pancreas?

Living donors and deceased (non-living) donors provide kidneys for transplantation. Typically, living donors are immediate family members or occasionally spouses. Donor kidneys from deceased donors originate from individuals whose families consent to organ donation at the time of death. Three out of every four kidney transplants are conducted using kidneys from dead donors.

Transplants of the combined kidney and pancreas, as well as the single pancreas, are only performed on deceased donor organs.

All donors are thoroughly vetted to eliminate the possibility of transmittable illnesses or other problems. Additionally, the donor is carefully screened to ensure that they are a good match for your tissue and blood type.

Are pancreatic transplantations performed in the absence of kidney transplantation?

A pancreas transplant may be performed in certain instances without requiring a kidney transplant. Pancreas transplantation may be performed on patients who have already received a kidney transplant or on people who do not have kidney failure but do have Type I diabetic problems.

Although the rate of pancreas transplant complications is comparable to that of kidney and pancreas transplants, the long-term success rate is lower. However, newer medications and improved tissue matching techniques can provide a reasonable success rate. Depending on your medical condition, your doctor and transplant surgeon can assess whether a pancreas transplant is necessary for addition to a kidney transplant.

What occurs during kidney and pancreatic transplantation?

Kidney and pancreas transplantation entails implanting a healthy kidney and pancreas into the body, where they can fulfil all of the activities normally performed by a failing kidney and pancreas.

The new kidney is surgically linked to neighbouring blood arteries on the lower left side of the abdomen. The kidney is easily connected to blood arteries and the bladder when it is in this position. The new kidney’s vein and artery are connected to your vein and artery. The ureter of the replacement kidney is connected to your bladder, allowing urine to exit your body.

The new pancreas is surgically attached to neighbouring blood arteries on the lower right side of your belly. The replacement pancreas’s vein and artery are connected to your vein and artery.

Transplantation of the kidneys and pancreas takes between 5 and 7 hours. Patients undergoing transplantation typically stay between 8 and 12 days in the hospital.
