Tech I Love Vol. 2 — UserLook Recorder
I’m always looking for an edge in the customer research portion of building a startup, and this next piece of tech plays a key piece here.
UserLook Recorder is a software I found from browsing, you guessed it, Product Hunt. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was a UX designer and engineer’s dream.
When you building out your wireframes or your MVP, you need to know if you’ve built a nice to have or a must-have product/service. Customer research is how you do that. Initially, you had to stand over their shoulders and mark down how a customer interacted with your product. At scale, you would hire someone to do the study for you while they stand behind a special mirror…even though they all knew exactly what was going on (and may have adjusted their behavior accordingly).
UserLook Recorder allows you to not only do customer research but also competitor research as well. Want to know the true difference between your product and a competitor’s product, look no further than pitting them side by side to a user.
The crux behind this software is that it records the user’s interactions on the screen as well as their verbal reflections as they are exploring your product. All by simply sharing a link. No intense onboarding. No back and forth. Just a simple link.
Application
Once you get outside your friends and family circle, it may be difficult to get people to review your product authentically. If you’re thinking about paying them for it here’s an idea of how you can structure your user test:
- Have potential testers fill out a form to register
- Link that form to Zapier
- Link Zapier to email so that it delivers custom-link for the user test
- Receive confirmation that the user test is finished
- Validate that the test was completed correctly
- Send out that Starbucks/Target gift-card
