Live Aid, the multi-venue, globe-straddling benefit concert organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, took place on Saturday 13 July 1985. The event, watched by 1.9 billion viewers across 150 nations forever placed the horrors of the Ethiopian famine firmly in the mind of the global consciousness.

Where previous humanitarian efforts had failed to unite the disparate and complex triggers at the heart of Governmental action, Geldof and Ure succeed by catalysing a global community focused on changing the mind of government for social good.

Could the spirit Geldof and Ure tapped into be replicated in a modern context? At Saltwater Games we say Yes — and thanks to the economics of Web3, we’re much closer to making it a reality than ever before.

Web3 Unleashed

Advances in Blockchain technology and the economic freedom of Web3 have created an environment where gamers can now see real-world rewards for their time and effort.

Pioneers like Axie Infinity showed the way, by building a decentralised gaming community that delivered financial rewards in the real-world.

At Saltwater Games we are taking this one step further. By building a AAA gaming environment that offers gamers the chance to not only make a positive social impact through their efforts — both in terms of personal education and investment in real-world impact projects — but also through very real monetary rewards.

This combination of extrinsic monetary and intrinsic social impact is the backbone of a new model for philanthropy we’re naming Play2Impact.

The Untapped Potential of Play

A sense of play is at the heart of every creative endeavour. Play brings humans together and has been shown to be integral to our very evolution as a species. Play is its own intrinsic reward. An endless source of creative motivation.

Through building an environment that enables gamers to not only explore their natural creative instincts, but to also make very real social impacts — Saltwater Games is exploiting this potential in a radically exciting way.

By ensuring that the projects our gaming community can invest in are beneficial, but also economically self-sustaining, we are also challenging a broken model of philanthropy that unfortunately does not always yield effective results for those involved.

Who said making the world a better place didn’t have to be exciting.

Celeros — Turning Dreams into Reality

Celeros — Saltwater Games’ debut title — is the mixed-reality, AAA, Web3, free-to-play, play-to-earn video game that brings this vision to life.

Through our first partnership with Airspeeder — we provide gamers with the opportunity to immerse themselves fully in the real-world mechanics of the world’s first motorsport series for electric flying cars.

Players will have the opportunity to educate themselves through a game narrative that explores the mechanics that underpin the incredible world of flying motorsports.

The more time players spend in this world, the greater an opportunity they will have to not only rise through the ranks of our gaming community, but to potentially join the Airspeeder academy one day pilot a vehicle themselves.

Philanthropy 2.0

As players advance through the game, they will also be able to see their efforts directly impact real-world social and environmental impact projects, as chosen by the wider community.

Think about it. A global community of gamers, shaping and creating a financial eco-system that delivers on the promise of harnessing the passion of the gaming community in the name of social good.

A decentralised platform, that allows for smart investments in philanthropic projects that are grounded in the practical need to provide financial yield and return for those involved.

Projects grounded in the very human understanding that you don’t solve a problem by simply throwing money at it.

It’s almost a surprise that no one’s done it before. Almost.

The Future for Play2Impact

With the foundations in place, the future is looking very bright indeed. Following on from our recent partnership announcement with Airspeeder, we’re getting ever nearer to hearing the starting line gun fire for real.

With an initial launch date set for 2023, we are hard at work ensuring that the complex ecosystem of gamers, sponsors, and mixed-world technology partners are in place and ready to deliver on the potential of the Play2Impact vision.

As Len Findlay, Founder and Director of Saltwater Games, put it in a recent interview, “I want people to get inspired by the opportunity to both learn about engineering and the opportunity to do something for the world.”

It seems that the Live Aid spirit might be here to stay.
