What should you do if you are starting a blog or have started a blog, but you have many interests and would like to cover multiple topics? Can you still have a profitable blog even if you talk about lots of different things? Should you break it into two (or more blogs) or just stick with one topic even though you’d really like to cover other topics? This is actually one of the questions I get asked most frequently from my readers who are getting ready to start their own blog.

What should you do if you are starting a blog or have started a blog, but you have many interests and would like to cover multiple topics? Can you still have a profitable blog even if you talk about lots of different things? Today I'm sharing my thoughts this and a recent periscope video.

So, here’s my answer:

From a purely strategic perspective, it probably is ideal for a blog to be focused on one topic. It will be easier to attract readers who are interested in that topic and can usually be profitable sooner than a blog that covers a wider range of topics. However, unless you are fortunate enough to truly have a ton of focused hours every single week to do nothing but blog, I actually would NOT recommend creating multiple blogs. I also wouldn’t recommend that you confine yourself to just one topic alone especially in the beginning when you are still finding your thing.

The main reason I wouldn’t recommend running multiple blogs is that it just takes too much time and hassle. Running just one blog is hard enough! You need to post very consistently, create an opt in freebie, communicate regularly with newsletter subscribers, promote your content, and be on at least one or two social media channels. Trying do all that twice will dilute your efforts so much that you can’t make much progress.

The obvious solution would be to just pick one topic and stick to it, but I think that’s too limiting in the beginning especially. There are definitely successful, highly profitable blogs that do cover a wider range of topics, so it’s certainly possible. Plus I think you need a chance to experiment with different topics to find what you really love to blog about and what your readers will really resonate with. So I would pick 2–3 topics and stick to those for a few months. Then re-evaluate and see if you want to narrow down. When blogging about multiple topics, I would focus on creating an e-mail list and a product centered around one topic at a time. Also, make it clear on your blog which topics you do cover, and make it easy for someone to find what they are interested in. My own blog is actually a pretty bad example of this. I’m working on a redesign that will make it much clearer, so don’t try to use my blog as an example!

This was the topic I discussed in a recent scope and I wanted to share. Here is the video for you to see:
